Why BESS are essential for the italian power grid
The energy transition path involves a significant increase in renewable energy production, presenting major challenges for the operation of the National Transmission Grid. In this context, electrochemical storage systems (BESS) will play a crucial role in ensuring transmission stability and operational flexibility of the national power system, enabling rapid balancing of intermittent renewable generation with market demand and grid transport constraints.
On a daily and aggregated basis, excess renewable energy produced beyond local demand can be stored in BESS and released back to the grid when needed, helping to maintain operational stability and enhance both short- and long-term resilience of the national power system.

Our team brings years of experience in the energy sector with a clear focus: developing high-performance storage systems ready for today’s markets and tomorrow’s grids.
We manage the entire BESS development process, from selecting the most strategic sites to reaching the ready-to-build stage. Our goal is to build a strong pipeline of stand-alone storage projects aligned with the requirements of the Italian capacity markets, ready for construction.

What we do
An integrated development process from feasibility to ready-to-build
We exclusively develop a pipeline of utility-scale BESS projects, guiding them through to the completion of the ready-to-build phase.
Our founders bring over twenty years of experience in energy, permitting, and infrastructure engineering.
Every project is built on a solid foundation: we select the most attractive sites through in-depth analyses and grid studies, managing all stages of preliminary and detailed design as well as the permitting process.
For the most complex and strategic design activities, we rely on qualified professionals and engineering firms.
BESS Project Development Process
Site Selection
We identify strategic locations for our business based on connection criteria, including analysis of grid contingencies and congestion, expected renewable energy production, economic and environmental sustainability, and logistical accessibility of the sites.
Engineering & Permitting
We coordinate and oversee the entire design and authorization process, from feasibility studies to securing all necessary permits for construction and operation (ready-to-build phase). For specialized engineering activities, we rely on the support of highly qualified external consultants and technicians.
Grid connection
Our large-scale BESS are connected to Terna’s National Transmission Grid (RTN). We select technical connection solutions that ensure system reliability while minimizing the environmental footprint of our plants.
Economic and Market Structure
We model the project’s revenue profile across multiple value streams, including:
- Participation in MACSE and Capacity Market auctions;
- Participation in grid service markets (e.g., specific start-up and reconnection modes, ramp rate and synthetic inertia limits, voltage support during grid faults, fast active and reactive power modulation, fast reserve, black-start system restoration services);
- Energy arbitrage;

We select technology partners and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) suppliers from the top manufacturers in the market, prioritizing innovative and reliable solutions. Together with them, we define the optimal plant layout and ensure performance, guaranteeing compliance with grid connection requirements and current regulations set by the TSO
BESS Pipeline
Projects under Development
Our 2025 pipeline consists of three BESS plants with a total capacity of 200 MW. The plants are connected to d-storage’s dedicated User Electrical Station (SEU), exclusively serving them.
The short distance between the SEU and the Terna Connection Point (PdC) via high-voltage cable allows for plant optimization, resulting in CAPEX reduction and shorter construction times—offering a competitive advantage for the initiative.
Each plant is designed to operate in stand-alone mode, ensuring full operational autonomy and compliance with the technical and functional requirements set by the TSO, both in regulated regimes and in the energy market.

- BESS50A – 50 MW / 200 MWh
Construction start expected: 2028–2029
Our team is evaluating the development of additional sites in strategic areas of the National Transmission Grid (RTN) with the goal of expanding and diversifying the BESS pipeline nationwide.
We welcome partnerships with financial and industrial operators to accelerate our growth and advance these projects to the construction phase.
